The Coca-Cola Company in South Africa is confirming a national recall of one of its products – Hollandia Powerstart Mageu (Powerstart Mageu).
It was confirmed, following a standard quality testing routine, that four specific batches of Powerstart Mageu are contaminated with higher than normal levels of a bacterium, Bacillus Cereus. This bacterium is naturally occurring and is commonly found in many plant-based raw materials at low quantities. Ingestion of product that has high amounts of this bacteria may cause diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach cramps, particularly in vulnerable groups of people with a low immune system. As a precautionary measure the company is recalling all the Powerstart Mageu products.
Of the affected batches, only 428 cases of the product are confirmed to be sent into the trade in the Limpopo and Tshwane regions.
The remainder of the product was immediately placed in quarantine, and, as an added preventive measure, we took the decision to withdraw all stock nationwide, with immediate effect. In partnership with our distributors, all affected product has now been removed from trade. However, company believe that consumers may have purchased the affected product (details below):
Company said that, If you have purchased any of Powerstart Mageu product, consumers should return the product where they bought it from for a reimbursement.
As the health and wellbeing of the general public is our primary concern, the production and distribution of Powerstart Mageu has been placed on hold.
