patent to treat leg cramps
Ahmedabad-based NV Lifecare Pvt Ltd has received patent for a nutritional supplement ‘Crampfort’ from Indian Patent Office for treatment of pregnancy induced leg cramps.
Crampfort was invented by Dr Sanjay Agrawal and his team to relieve for leg cramps in pregnancy period. The Crampfort is first-of-its-kind evidence based medicine composed of selected natural ingredients and a combination of plenty of essential minerals, vitamins, and amino acids with convenient dosage and easy to administer without any drug interaction with high safety profile being as a nutraceutical. It is designed in a way to act as a nutritional supplement to mother and the growing fetus.
Nutritional supplement Crampfort is very safe and effective due to its unique and novel formulation. The concentration of content is as per the US FDA Pregnancy Index, and it has received patent right in time and without any objection from patent controller's office.
According to Danforth's Obstetrics and Gynecology, almost half of all pregnant women suffer from muscle spasms in their legs, with cramping more frequent during the evening time. Leg cramps are a sudden tightening of muscles, which can cause intense pain. The muscles may tighten for many reasons such as lack of fluids; injury; muscle strain; staying in the same position for a long period of time; and blood circulation problems or pressure on the nerves in the spine. Leg cramps may start to plague during second and third trimester and may get worse as the pregnancy progresses and weight get increased. While these cramps can occur during the day time, probably one notices them most at night, when it interferes with one’s ability to get a good night's sleep. In other ways cramps are sudden and sharp gripping kind of pain attacking calf muscles during second and third trimester of pregnancy. These leg cramps are mostly nocturnal and thus disturb sleep.
During pregnancy 50 per cent of women suffering pregnancy induced leg cramps; the pathology of pregnancy induced leg cramps is not exactly identified, it may be due to hormonal imbalance, excessive body weight which causes the strain on calf muscles or may be due to nutritional deficiency, and it is established that by giving vitamins, minerals and amino acids, it can be subside.
In pregnancy hypertension causes maternal, fetal, neonatal morbidity and mortality. The fetus has an increased risk of intrauterine growth restriction and it leads to prematurity. Its management depends only on blood pressure (BP) control, gestational age and blood flow in the placenta. Non-pharmacological management is recommended but not during maternal and fetal risk factors, according to a medical expert.
Before invention of Crampfort, there was no specific therapy for pregnancy induced leg cramps. In normal condition doctors were using analgesics and muscle relaxants. They are contra-indicated during pregnancy period, whereas Crampfort is very safe and effective due to its unique and novel formulation, according to Atish N Contractor, SBU Head, NV Lifecare.
The Crampfort reduces leg cramps in pregnancy by following methods: Releases energy immediately for the muscles under stress; Reducing the oxidative stress (acts as anti oxidants) caused due to accumulation of free radicals (harmful substance which are produced in body); Stamina may be enhanced and hemoglobin synthesis is also facilitated; Supporting and marinating a healthy digestive system; Convert fats and carbohydrates into energy for aching muscles; CNS hyper excitability suppression effect (relaxing the nerves); Replenishes the calcium stores; Protects nerve cell and sheath maintenance (protecting the nerves); and Facilitates long-chain fatty acid entry into cellular mitochondria, thereby delivering substrate for oxidation and subsequent energy production, and plays a vital role in RBC synthesis thereby enhancing the stamina (vitamins B5, B6 and B12).
The key ingredients of Crampfort are dextrose, vitamin E, vitamin B5, magnesium sulphate, vitamin B6, calcium ascorbate, methylcobalamin and levocarnitine, and it is available in fixed dose combination (FDC) in single dosage form.
The significant non-medicinal ingredients of Crampfort are beta cyclodextrene, sodium methyl paraben (preservative), sodium propyl paraben (preservative) and sodium benzoate (preservative), and the product comes in lemon flavour.
Crampfort can be taken every day or as per physician's instruction. It is very important to continue taking Crampfort as long as physician prescribes it in order to prevent the recurrence of leg cramps. And it can be taken with or without food, but it should be taken consistently with respect to food intake, at the same time every day.
It is necessary to protect the product from light and it can be stored at room temperature (15°C–30°C). Sachet form is only for one time use. Discard the left out powder if not consumed in single time.
The product cannot be used for people with hypersensitive to any of the medicinal or non-medicinal ingredients; having renal disorders; having on anticoagulant therapy and in toxemia of pregnancy; and closed head injury, stroke (cerebro-vascular accident).
