The Union Food Processing Minister, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, has emphasized the crucial role of education and skill development in the future of the food processing industry which is expected to play a catalytic role in the growth story of India. Chairing the meeting of the Food Processing Education Council (FPEC) held on November 19, Harsimrat Kaur Badal emphasized the need for focused intervention at different parts of the food value chain from the farm gate to the consumer. One of the suggestions made by the experts was the need to include courses on food processing, nutrition and food safety in school curriculum.

The meeting was attended by K. Chandramouli, Chairperson, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, Dr Amrita Patel, Former Chairperson, National Dairy Development Board, Dr Ashok Gulati, Chairman, Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, Professor Vasant Gandhi from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, members of the industry representing Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Confederation of Indian Industry, Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India and All India Food Processors Association.

Ministry of Food Processing Industries is working closely with the industry through Food Industry Capacity and Skill Initiative (FICSI) under FICCI on skill development. FICSI has selected Ernst & Young to develop National Occupational Standards (NOS) for the food processing industry.
