15 Food Safety Officers will carry out the inspections

The Delhi government has recommended conducting inspections of sweets and namkeens to avoid adulteration during the Holi festival. Often the adulterated products flood the market while the demand for products increases. Hence, the officials are trying to conduct a special drive to ensure the adulterated products are seized and don’t reach the consumers.

The officials have been instructed to collect the legal samples of sweets, gujiya, and other related items. Also, 11 units have been specifically allocated to conduct those tests.

Additionally, 15 Food Safety Officers will carry out the inspections during this period. The samples will be lifted from random places, as per the complaints of the consumer and intelligence basis.  The decision to conduct the inspection was due to the consumers’ complaints.

As per last year’s news, in April 2021, 400 people fell sick post consuming adulterated buckwheat flour in the Kalyanpuri area.

Ashwin Bhadri, CEO, Equinox Labs says, “Adulteration during the festivals is a common concern and especially during Holi and Diwali, it is at its peak. Adulteration not only affects the quality of the food but degrades the nutritional value of the food. Conducting those random tests might not help to stop the adulteration, but mishaps can be avoided. Therefore, to ensure the consumption is safer, the officials have taken the steps to inspect adulterated food.”
