These codes should contain all necessary and relevant information about the product, such as ingredients, nutritional facts, allergens, manufacturing date, best before/expiry/use by date, allergen warnings, and customer inquiry contact information
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently released an advisory regarding the use of QR codes on food products. This advisory aims to ensure that visually challenged individuals can access all necessary information related to the food they consume. It is crucial to remember that everyone has the right to inclusive access to information.
It is essential to ensure that food labels are accessible to visually impaired consumers.
In its latest advisory, the FSSAI has directed FBOs to make nutritional information accessible for visually impaired individuals.
To provide consumers with more information about the products they buy, FSSAI recommends incorporating Quick Response (QR) codes on product labels. These codes should contain all necessary and relevant information about the product, such as ingredients, nutritional facts, allergens, manufacturing date, best before/expiry/use by date, allergen warnings, and customer inquiry contact information. This will help customers make informed decisions while purchasing and ensure their safety.
It is important to note that including a QR code for accessibility of information does not replace the requirement to provide mandatory product label information as prescribed by relevant regulations, according to FSSAI.
