The Supreme Court has imposed an interim ban on advertisements of Patanjali Ayurved’s medicines. This decision was made in response to a petition filed by the Indian Medical Association and others against Patanjali for making misleading claims that its medicines can cure certain diseases without any empirical evidence to back up those claims.

The Court criticised the Central government for not taking action against such misleading advertisements despite the petition being filed in 2022. The Court ordered that Patanjali cannot advertise or market their medicinal products, which they claim would treat ailments specified in the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act.

The Court also cautioned Patanjali against making adverse statements or claims against other forms of medicine. Moreover, the Court issued a contempt of court notice to Patanjali’s founders Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna for flouting previous orders of the Court by continuing to propagate false and misleading claims regarding their products’ ability to cure diseases.
