SFA recalls Everest’s fish curry masala

Ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not authorised for use in food, even though it can be used in the sterilisation of spices

Singapore’s Food Agency (SFA) has recalled Everest’s Fish Curry Masala, a popular Indian spice brand, due to the presence of ethylene oxide in increased levels, which is unsuitable for human consumption. Ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not authorised for use in food, even though it can be used in the sterilisation of spices.

The Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong has issued a notification about the recall of the product from India due to the presence of ethylene oxide at levels exceeding permissible limits. As the affected products were imported into Singapore, the SFA has directed the importer, Sp Muthiah & Sons Pte. Ltd., to recall the products.

According to the SFA statement, the recall is ongoing. Although there is no immediate risk to consumption of food contaminated with low levels of ethylene oxide, long-term exposure may lead to health issues. Therefore, exposure to this substance should be minimised as much as possible. Consumers who have purchased the affected products are advised not to consume them. Those who have already consumed the product and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers may contact their point of purchase for any enquiries.
