The conference provides the platform for global collaboration
An International Conference on “Proteomics for System Integrated Bio-Omics, One Health and Food Safety” was organized at National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal from 2nd to 4rth December. The main theme of the conference was on the application of proteomics on human as well as animal health and food safety. The conference provides the platform for global collaboration as it brings close together eminent speakers, scientists, medicos, industrialist, academician, studentsand other stakeholders from across the world.
On this occasion Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (Department of Agricultural Research and Education) & Director General (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) said that recent years have witnessed the contribution of Omics platform in all aspects of life including plant, animal, human and environment. He said that proteomic science is considered as next step in biology and involves identification of proteins in a tissue or cell, and the determination of their function, structure and modifications. He further said that the main objectives in the field of proteomics are: (i) Identify all proteins; (ii) Analyse differential protein expression in different samples; (iii) Characterize proteins by identifying and studying their function andcellular localization; and (iv) Understand protein interaction networks. He highlighted some of the applications of proteomics such as its role in drug discovery, to understand the pathogen and host interaction, biomarker discovery etc. In the area of Animal Science, Proteomics holds the potential to unravel the proteome profile of our different indigenous bovine breeds as well as understanding the pathogen-protein analysis and interactions which will yield better strategies to tackle zoonotic diseases. He said that organization of such events will further bring closure the world community and has the potential to develop scientific collaborations in this cutting area of science and technology.
On this occasion, Dr. Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (ICAR) stressed the need of development of rapid diagnostic methods for addressing the needs of human as well animal health sector along with issues in food safety. He stressed the need of identifying applications of proteomics in such area where such scientific knowledge is relevant to common man. He also gave some examples of potential applications of proteomics in animal science area such as in identification of markers of heat stress, pregnancy detection, heat detection etc. and emphasized that research work in this direction may be taken to definite conclusion.
Dr. RRB Singh, Director, ICAR-NDRI emphasized that the conference covers wide interdisciplinary topics like proteomics, cell biology, proteogenomics, system biology and food safety under one umbrella to share and exchange scientific ideas. Further he said, that the deliberations will give a new insight into emerging field of proteomics and systems biology.He said that this event is important for NDRI as the Scientist (Dr. Marc Wilkins) who coined the term “Proteomics” is attending this conference and has given plenary talk.
Prof. Utpal Tatu, President, Proteomics Society, India said that the organization of such conferences is an annual event, and this is 11th Conference being organized at NDRI, Karnal.
Dr. A. K. Mohanty, Organizing Secretary, said that in this conference around 400 scientists and young researchers/students representing more than 10 countries from various organizations are participating in the event. The conference will also feature poster presentations where young scientists will be appreciated in form of best paper/poster awards.
