Inaugurates renovated 20,000 litres per day (LPD) milk processing plant at Gungoor, Silchar
NDDB-managed West Assam Milk Producer’s Coop Union Ltd (WAMUL) Purabi Dairy formally commenced operations in Barak Valley with the inauguration of the renovated 20,000 litres per day (LPD) milk processing plant at Gungoor, Silchar by Krishnendu Paul, Minister, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, Government of Assam. The facility, earlier under the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department has been upgraded under the Assam Dairy Development Plan and operationalised by North East Dairy and Foods, a joint venture of the Government of Assam and the National Dairy Development Board. The event was also graced by Kaushik Rai, Minister, Barak Valley Development Department and S Regupathi, Executive Director, NDDB among other distinguished dignitaries.
Completed in less than 10 months by NDDB’s wholly-owned subsidiary IDMC, the plant has been equipped with modern dairy processing machinery and quality control systems to ensure production of hygienically processed and standardised milk. With its commissioning, consumers in Silchar and adjoining areas will have access to fresh pouch milk under the Purabi brand, along with a range of value-added dairy products.
In his address, the minister stated that the commissioning of the plant represents a significant step towards fulfilling the State’s vision of expanding organised dairy infrastructure, ensuring balanced regional growth and creating assured procurement channels for local dairy farmers. He emphasised that strengthening cooperative institutions is essential for improving farmer incomes and ensuring nutritional security.
Seetharaman Regupathi highlighted that sustainable dairy development requires end-to-end technical support across breeding, feed and fodder management, transparent milk procurement, scientific processing, value addition and professional marketing, best delivered through producer-owned institutions working on cooperative principles. He reaffirmed NDDB’s continued technical & institutional support for dairy development in Assam.
