India recently held a seminar in Shanghai to promote Indian tea, which was attended by prominent Chinese tea importers and tea-experts.

The objective of the event was to promote Indian tea in China and get feedback on possible strategy to increase the import and consumption of Indian tea in the Chinese market.

People in China where tea originated, mainly consume light green teas without milk unlike the dark brown Indian tea, which makes it difficult for Indian teas to penetrate into Chinese markets.

Consul General of India in Shanghai, Anil Kumar Rai, urged the participants to provide inputs, advice and suggestions for improving the market access of Indian tea varieties in the Chinese market and also on the ways and means to make it easily and readily available to the customers.

He also elaborated upon the efforts made by the Indian government and Tea Board of India to provide trademarks and geographical indications (GI) so that authentic, good quality and genuine Indian tea can be enjoyed by the tea lovers.
