FSSAI forms panel on nutraceuticals regulations

Delhi, August 28, 2013: Food Safety and Security Authority of India (FSSAI) – an apex body that regulates food safety and standards – has formed a committee on nutraceuticals and held its first on August 29.

Sharing this information during the launch of NuFFooDS Spectrum magazine at The Claridges, New Delhi, K Chandramouli, Chairman, FSSAI, said the authority will take up the issue of nutraceuticals regulations in the country and the norms would soon become reality.

“Summits such as Nutra India Summit are of great relevance to us as they provide a platform for interaction and networking between all stakeholders of the industry,” said Chandramouli, “It helps us to get feedback and suggestions from the industry.”

Speaking at the magazine launch, Dr T Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, said food is a part of health management system. About 30% of the children in India suffer from malnutrition. Hence our responsibility lies in providing safe and nutritious food to them. In this regard the industry needs to act by balancing between service and business aspects using three important tools namely nutritionals, nutraceuticals and naturals.

Dr V Prakash, distinguished scientist of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and president, International Society for Nutraceuticals, Nutritionals and Naturals (ISNNaN) said India has been witnessing a high growth in nutraceuticals space in the last few years. This growth will provide opportunities to all without any competition. In this growing market, the industry needs to have self regulations to overcome issues related to consumers’ health. By following self imposed regulations, we can soon become leaders in the global nutraceuticals space.

Ravi Boratkar, advisory board member of NuFFooDS Spectrum, shared highlights of 9th Nutra India Summit 2014 being organised in Bangalore on March 12-14. This three-day conference and exhibition focusses on “New Sutra for Nutra – for emerging global economies”. The upcoming summit will also have special focus on sportsceuticals and cosmeceuticals.
