US based Neogen Corporation has expanded its comprehensive line of food allergen test kits to include Veratox for Sesame Allergen Test, which can be used to screen samples at a set level, or provide precise quantitative results.

It provides results in just 30 minutes after extraction. The new test can screen samples or provide results in the range of 2.5 to 25 parts per million (ppm), and has been validated for use in testing food products such as spices and bakery products and clean-in-place rinses.

The new test is an addition to the company’s line of rapid test kits for 19 different food allergens, including peanut, milk, egg, almond, gluten, soy, mustard and hazelnut.

Neogen is a leader in the development and marketing of diagnostic tests to detect the inadvertent contamination of food with allergens that are not listed on the ingredient label.

Jennifer Baker at Neogen stated that with the development of this new test for sesame, Neogen continues to provide the rapid and reliable allergen detection food producers have come to expect from the company.

She also added that regulators in both Europe and Canada have identified sesame as an allergen of concern. Neogen strives to help food manufacturers ensure that an unlabeled and potentially dangerous allergen does not make its way into a food product.

The Veratox for Sesame test kit utilises the successful format of the company’s previously released quantitative food allergen tests, and requires similar laboratory equipment. The new test has received an excellent response and consistent results from independent laboratories.

Neogen also offers Reveal 3-D lateral flow tests for allergens, which make it simple to screen for the presence of low levels of allergens virtually anywhere. Sample preparation and testing takes less than ten minutes.

The food allergen testing products have been developed in close cooperation with the University of Nebraska’s Food Allergy Research and Resource Programme (FARRP), a partnership between the food industry and the university, which was formed to provide research and resource tools to the food industry. It is an authority for training and educating the industry on allergen awareness.

Neogen develops and markets products dedicated to food and animal safety. Its Food Safety Division markets dehydrated culture media and diagnostic test kits to detect food-borne bacteria, natural toxins, food allergens, drug residues, plant diseases and sanitation concerns.

The company’s Animal Safety Division is a leader in the development of animal genomics along with the manufacturing and distribution of a variety of animal healthcare products, including diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, veterinary instruments, wound care and disinfectants.
