Badal has resigned in protest against anti-farmer ordinances and legislation

The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Harsimrat Kaur Badal from the Union Council of Ministers, with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution.

Further, as advised by the Prime Minister, the President has directed that Narendra Singh Tomar, Cabinet Minister, be assigned the charge of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, in addition to his existing portfolios.

According to her twitter account, Badal has resigned in protest against anti-farmer ordinances and legislation.

Two bills aimed at transforming agriculture in the country and raising farmers’ income were passed by Lok Sabha yesterday. She stepped down shortly before the bills were passed.

The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 seeks to provide for the creation of an ecosystem where the farmers and traders enjoy the freedom of choice relating to sale and purchase of farmers’ produce.

The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 seeks to provide for a national framework on farming agreements that protects and empowers farmers to engage with agri-business firms, processors, wholesalers, exporters or large retailers for farm services and sale of future farming produce.

According to Akali Dal president Sukhbir Badal, the party was never in favour on the ordinances, and that Harsimrat had told the government about farmers’ reservations. Farmers in Haryana and Punjab have been agitating against these bills.
