The regulatory body has urged state food commissioners to regulate an effective enforcement drive to inspect the adulteration of commonly used spices

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a letter to the Commissioner of Food Safety of all States/UTs following media reports about the sale of adulterated spices in the domestic market.

’Instances have been reported recently in the media regarding the sale of adulterated spices in the domestic market. As per one such report, the spices like dhaniya powder is being adulterated with bajra and dhaniya stem whereas turmeric powder is being adulterated with broken rice which is mixed with yellow colour,’ read the FSSAI letter.

The regulatory body urged state food commissioners to regulate an effective enforcement drive to inspect the adulteration of commonly used spices like dhaniya, haldi, lal mirch powder, etc., in mandis/wholesale markets under their jurisdictions.

’Further, the necessary action as deemed fit may be initiated against the defaulting Food Business Operators as per the provision laid down under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, Rules and Regulations 2011 made thereunder,’ FSSAI said.

Ashwin Bhadri, CEO of Equinox Labs, said, “The fact that FSSAI has ordered food commissioners to implement an enforcement drive to look into this matter is good to hear.”
