Ageing Youthfully with Ashwagandha

In 2020, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Food Institute carried out a risk assessment of Ashwagandha, an important medicinal plant that has been used in Ayurvedic and indigenous medicine for more than 3000 years, for the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and subsequently banned the substance. Based on this report, Ashwagandha may be banned in Finland, Sweden and further EU member states. Very recently, The Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia has also published advisory on similar lines. The Indian Government, traditional medicine scientists and industries must work together to generate evidence to counter this fast moving concept (or misconception?).

T here is no doubt our societies are ageing. This has consequences on health, social, and familial care in any modern society. By 2050, it is projected that one in four people in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region will surpass the age of 60, the number will be tripled to nearly 1.3 billion people in the region since 2010. We should acknowledge that there are many concepts and theories (more than 300) to explain ageing. The concept of ageing may be broadly conceptualised as “ageing as a natural, ever-progressing deterioration of physiological functions; an increased susceptibility to certain diseases; and an intrinsic, age-related process of loss of viability and increase in vulnerability leading ultimately to death”.

Healthy ageing: How to achieve this target?

Ageing is not a disease, but some disease conditions accelerate the normal ageing process. Now the big question is how to approach healthy ageing?
