India’s sugar export move sparks global reactions

The government’s decision comes after evaluating domestic sugar availability to ensure price stability

India’s recent decision to permit the export of one million tonnes (MT) of sugar for the 2024-25 season has elicited mixed reactions across the global sugar industry. While the Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) welcomed the move as a much-needed boost to the domestic sugar sector, concerns have been raised internationally, particularly by Australia.

The Australian Sugar Milling Council (ASMC) has expressed apprehensions over potential disruptions to global sugar markets. “India’s decision to resume subsidized sugar exports threatens to destabilize global prices. For Australia, where over 80 per cent of sugar production is exported—valued at over $2 billion—this move puts significant pressure on our manufacturers, growers, and regional economies,” said Ash Salardini, CEO of ASMC. “It undermines fair trade practices and risks destabilizing the global market, which could have wider implications for Australia’s export-driven economy.”

In contrast, ISMA lauded the Indian government’s decision, emphasizing its positive impact on domestic sugar mills and farmers. “This progressive step addresses surplus stocks, improves financial liquidity, and ensures timely payments to sugarcane farmers. It strengthens the agricultural economy and aligns with the sector’s long-term sustainability,” ISMA noted in a statement.

The government’s decision comes after evaluating domestic sugar availability to ensure price stability. “This policy will support over 50 million sugarcane farmers, 500,000 sugar mill workers, and strengthen the sector as a whole,” said Food Minister Pralhad Joshi.

While the move has sparked global debate, it underscores India’s commitment to balancing domestic needs with international trade.
