ICAR-NBAGR registers 10 new livestock and poultry breeds

This registration follows the recommendations of the Breed Registration Committee (BRC) of ICAR

The ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources in Karnal has officially registered ten new indigenous breeds. These include the Manah buffalo from Assam, the Gaddi dog from Himachal Pradesh, the Tripureswari duck from Tripura, the Chaugarkha goat from Uttarakhand, the Bundelkhandi goat from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, the Karkambi pig from Maharashtra, the Kheri sheep from Rajasthan, the Changkhi dog, the Ladakhi donkey, and the Ladakhi yak from Ladakh (Union Territory). This registration follows the recommendations of the Breed Registration Committee (BRC) of ICAR.

With the addition of these breeds, the total number of registered Indigenous animal breeds in India now stands at:

– 53 for cattle

– 21 for buffalo

– 41 for goats

– 46 for sheep

– 8 for horses and ponies

– 9 for camels

– 15 for pigs

– 4 for donkeys

– 5 for dogs

– 2 for yaks

– 20 for chickens

– 4 for ducks

– 1 for geese.

The BRC, which is chaired by Dr Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science) at ICAR, serves as the apex body for the registration of newly identified animal breeds in the country. The committee held its 12th meeting on January 6, 2025, at the NASC in New Delhi, during which it approved the registration of these livestock and poultry breeds from various states.
