Inside BENEO’s new pulse plant: pioneering sustainable protein from faba beans
The new packaging provides strength and durability while protecting the fire starters from moisture during storage and transport
Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper and ZARELO, Europe’s leading producers of woodfibre firelighters, have partnered to introduce a recyclable paper-based packaging solution for fire starters used in fireplaces and barbecues. Made from Mondi’s re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5, the new packaging provides strength and durability while protecting the fire starters from moisture during storage and transport.
Mondi’s re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5 is produced entirely in-house, made from FSCTM and PEFC certified paper. As part of Mondi’s re/cycle portfolio, it is recyclable in existing European paper recycling streams where facilities are in place. ZARELO’s fire starter range includes coiled wood fibres and newly introduced compact cubes, packed in three sizes: 32 pieces, 1 kg, and 2 kg. The packaging ensures puncture resistance and durability, protecting the products throughout transport and handling. Its high-quality printability enhances ZARELO’s brand visibility at the point of sale, strengthening its presence in retail chains.
“Fire starters require packaging that keeps them dry and intact while ensuring ease of handling and storage,” says Francesco Fardella, Business Solution Manager for Functional Paper & Films, Mondi. “This solution combines strong barrier properties with excellent printability, offering both product protection and a premium retail presence—all while supporting circularity.”
“Switching from cardboard to flexible paper-based packaging was a key step in improving efficiency for our filling process,” says Christoph Raithel, plant manager, ZARELO. “Our collaboration with Mondi enabled us to scale production and expand our presence beyond Germany into international retail markets, including the UK, Italy, and Poland.”
