FSSAI asks to remove any claims of A1 and A2 types from packing

The use of A2 claims on milk fat products is deemed misleading and not in line with the FSS Act, 2006, and its regulations

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has clarified the marketing of milk and its products, such as ghee and butter, as A1 and A2 types. Sellers must obtain an FSSAI License Number or Registration Certificate Number for these products to ensure compliance with food safety standards to protect consumer health. The FSSAI has directed all food businesses, including e-commerce FBOs, to remove any claims of A1 and A2 types from the packaging of milk and its products. The use of A2 claims on milk fat products is deemed misleading and not in line with the FSS Act, 2006, and its regulations. FBOs are selling or marketing milk and milk products under the A1 and A2 categories, even with the FSSAI license number and Registration Certificate Number.

The regulatory body emphasised that the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, do not specify or recognise any differentiation of milk based on A1 and A2 types. FBOs are instructed to remove such claims from their products, and e-commerce FBOs need to remove all A1 and A2 protein-related claims from their websites immediately.

FBOs are allowed to use up any pre-printed labels within six months from the date of this directive. No further extension or timeline will be granted to any FBO.
