SIES Mumbai opens Institute of Chromatography and Spectrometry

South Indian Education Society (SIES), a leading educational institute of Mumbai yesterday inaugurated SIES Institute of Chromatography and Spectrometry. President of Chromatographic Society of India, Dr G. Ramakrishnan will act as director of the institute.

The center is equipped with GC, GCMS, HPLC, UV-VIS, FT-IR and FT-IR microscopy which will be primarily used for training undergraduate and postgraduate students at SIES and extended to the students of other colleges gradually. The staff members pursuing research and PhD can also avail the facilities at the center as per their requirements.

Perkin Elmer India is actively involved in setting up of this institute and they will help the Center in providing the technical support in maintenance and take part in the training courses in the future. Chromatographic Society of India has said that it is also looking forward to working with the institute to conduct the various chromatography courses for students and chemists from the industry.

The inauguration was followed by one symposium on chromatography and spectrometry in which dignitaries from the industry delivered their lectures on the topics on application of analytical techniques in various industries.

Dr G. Ramakrishnan said,” Analytical techniques like GCMS and LCMS are touching our lives. Be it pathology, agriculture, sports medicine or forensic science, chromatography and spectrometry have always played crucial role in delivering decisions of life and death”. He guided students on possible career avenues in the field of chromatography and spectrometry.

Dr S Narasimhan, Asthagiri Herbal Research Foundation delivered a talk on usefulness of chromatographic and spectrometric techniques in natural products extraction and pest control in agriculture.
