ICAR-IIOR, Hyderabad celebrates 42nd Foundation Day

The ICAR-Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (IIOR), Rajendranagar, Hyderabad recently celebrated its 42nd Foundation Day.

The Chief Guest, Dr. S.K. Pattanayak, I.A.S., Former Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India emphasized to address the demand-supply gap in the edible oil production that is likely to widen further due to the increasing population, per capita demand with increased consumption by formulating the appropriate strategies for attaining the self-sufficiency as. He also highlighted that the government also has flagged it as an important objective in making India a USD 5 trillion economy by the Year – 2024. Dr. Pattanayak presented the Foundation Day lecture on “Achieving Self-Sufficiency in Oilseeds and Edible oil production”.

He stated that it is essential and practicable for reducing the demand for vegetable oils by creating the awareness among the consumers about the optimum and healthy oil consumption habits through mass media campaigns, mobile apps, advertisements, nutritional camps, general education, etc.

Dr. Pattanayak opined that the Government has to make the policy measures for controlling the imports, retail prices, subsidies, oilseed production support, food production priorities, consumer education, etc.

The Guest of Honor, Dr. V. Praveen Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, Hyderabad accentuated the importance of water, mechanization, value-addition and digital application in the agricultural research. He urged for nurturing the developed variety/hybrid/technologies released from the institute/scientist till its logical conclusion for reaching to the stakeholders.

The Guest of Honor, Shri P. Venugopal Reddy, Chairman, Ekalavya Foundation, Hyderabad opined for the need and importance of mid-level farmer friendly organizations or NGOs and Media. This would enable the assessment and effective reach of the technologies to the farmers and thus, helping for faster bridging the gap between planning and implementation.
