The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has established standards for non-bovine milk (including goat, camel, and sheep milk) as outlined in sub-regulation 2.1.2 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives).

Since 2021, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, has been implementing the National Livestock Mission (NLM) across the country. Under the entrepreneurship component of this scheme, known as the NLM-Entrepreneurship Development Programme (NLM-EDP), a capital subsidy of 50 per cent (up to Rs 50 lakh) is provided for establishing farms for poultry, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, camels, and donkeys, as well as for feed and fodder units. Eligible entities include individuals, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Joint Liability Groups (JLGs), Farmer Cooperative Organizations (FCOs), and Section 8 companies. Details regarding the eligible unit sizes under the NLM Entrepreneurship Development Programme (NLM-EDP).

The subsidy amounts are allocated to individuals, FPOs, FCOs, SHGs, JLGs, and other stakeholders under this scheme, both at the national level and specifically for Uttar Pradesh and the Sonipat District of Haryana.

In Uttar Pradesh, 145 NLM-EDP projects have been approved, totalling a sanctioned subsidy of Rs 32.91 crores. This initiative has created employment for 846 individuals and supported 5,978 farmers. It is also projected to contribute to an annual fodder production capacity of 28,000 MT, helping to induct 30,371 livestock and 2,200 poultry birds into the system.

In Haryana, 13 NLM-EDP projects have received approval under the scheme, with a total sanctioned subsidy of Rs 4.06 crore. This initiative has generated employment for 62 individuals and positively impacted 144 farmers. Moreover, the approved projects are expected to contribute to an annual fodder production capacity of 2,400 MT and will support the induction of 3,940 livestock and poultry birds into the system.
