In the coming days, cooperative societies will be established in Ladakh for pashmina, organic products, and honey
Amit Shah, Union Home and Cooperation Minister, inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple dairy infrastructure and cooperative initiatives in Ladakh, aimed at strengthening rural livelihoods and boosting the region’s dairy sector. In Kargil, he laid the foundation for a Rs 25 crore dairy plant with a processing capacity of 10,000 litres per day, highlighting its potential to empower local communities, especially women, by enabling income generation and self-reliance.
An Android-based EMCS app was also launched to ensure transparency, allowing milk producers to track their accounts digitally. Additionally, an MoU between the Ladakh Milk Federation and Mother Dairy will help expand market access for Ladakh’s dairy products across India.
Shah announced further expansion plans, including a 50,000 litres per day dairy plant in Leh and the introduction of climate-suitable high-yield livestock to boost production. He noted that India’s milk production has grown from 146 million tonnes in 2014–15 to 248 million tonnes, reflecting strong sectoral growth.
The minister also emphasised the expansion of cooperative models in pashmina, organic products, and honey, positioning them as key drivers of Ladakh’s economic development and self-reliance.
