Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) introduced new fully refined, non-GMO flaxseed oil sourced from plants not classified as organic, which it touts as suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The oil can be used in products ranging from supplements to pasta sauces and dressings.
The new flaxseed oil contains non-GMO plant-sourced omega-3 fatty acids, which are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential nutrients. Omega-3s are not produced by the body and must be obtained through a food source. The FDA considers products containing at least 160 mg per servings of alph-linolenic acid (ALA), to be a good source of omega-3s.
One research firm states that growing consumer health awareness is sparking an increase in demand for omega-3 fatty acids. In 2014, the global market for omega-3 ingredients was valued at $2.78 billion, projected to register a 15.2% CAGR between 2015 and 2021.
Flaxseed and other plant-based omega-3s supply ALA, which is a major point of difference between plant-based and marine-based omega-3 fatty acid profiles. However, both types of omega-3 fatty acid profiles offer health benefits. In addition, the popularity of other plant-based ingredient solutions bodes well for flaxseed acceptance among consumers.
One scientific review demonstrates how flax or flaxseed oil already has been incorporated successfully into baked foods, juices, milk and dairy products, muffins, dry pasta products, macaroni and meat products.
Companies such as Cargill, BASF Nutrition & Health, DSM, Enzymotec, Ltd and Heartland Flax, to name a few, all offer various omega-3 oils and ingredients. The introduction of flaxseed oil from ADM broadens the portfolio of nutritional oils available to formulators. As nutritional oils become more commonly available in a cost effective format, flaxseed and other oils with health benefits could allow for further development of value-added food products.
