The 19th IUFoST World Food Science and Technology Congress kick started today at the CIDCO exhibition centre in Navi Mumbai with the highlighted theme ’25 Billion Meals A Day By 2020- with Healthy, Nutritious, Safe & Diverse FOODS’.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by the presence of the Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal as the Chief Guest, along with other dignitaries, Prof Dr Dietrich Knorr, President IUFoST; Dr V Prakash, Congress Chair, IUFoST 2018; Jagdish Patankar, Organising Secretary, IUFoST 2018 Congress.
“We are capable of becoming a global food market. For this, we need to adopt the best of technologies. India is a market that nobody across the globe can afford to ignore for the sheer opportunities the country offers. India may be the largest producer of food, but it processes a mere 10 per cent of its produce, which consequently leads to very high wastage. In a country with growing population and shrinking land for producing food, food wastage is a major area of focus for our Government, and hence zero tolerance towards food wastage is one of the targets of my ministry”, said Harsimrat Kaur Badal during her opening address.
While addressing the audience, Dr V Prakash highlighted, “I am very proud to state that India is the only country in the world with a separate Ministry for Food Processing”.
The inaugural ceremony also saw the felicitation of key achievers with Life Time Achievement Awards in the field of food science and technology- Dr Vijay M Gupta (Fisheries Science and Technology and Allied Agricultural Areas), Dr Huub Leliveid (Food Science, Technology & Safety), Dr Mahtab S Bamji (Science of Food and Nutrition Applications to Masses), Dr Larry Keener (Networking Food Science, Technology & Safety), Dr Ashok B Vaidya (Traditional Wisdom, Ayur Science, Modern Medicine and its Integration for Health), Dr KrishanLal (Physical Science, Agri Business Co-Data and Allied Areas) and Prof GD Yadav (Advancements in Chemical Science, Food Technology for Engineering and Modern Education).
