The country’s apex food regulation body – FSSAI, for the second time, extended the deadline to comply with the “Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations 2011” to July 1, 2014.

The latest amendments pertain to regulation 2.2 in the Act which deals with fats, oils and fat emulsions. The amendment states that trans fatty acids in any edible or vanaspati oil should not be more than 10% by weight.

The new amendment also requires edible and vanaspati oils, as well as pre-packed food products with declared shelf life, to bear label stating their trans fats and saturated fats content in new prescribed format as ‘percentage of weight of the food product’. FSSAI had earlier extended the deadline to December 6, 2013.
