Regulatory support sort to educate consumers

“Regulatory body should take some part in educating consumers and corporate like us would like to invest on the same” said, Anuradha Narasimhan, Director Marketing of Britannia, discussing on commercial and regulatory aspect at the Food Ingredient Expo (FIE), Bangalore.

Dwelling on bakery products and health benefits Narsimhan highlighted the initiatives taken up by Britannia towards health benefit through bakery products; among which trans fat free product, fortification of products and diabetic friendly products were noteworthy.

FIE, a day long seminar organised by the Protein Foods and Nutrition Development Association of India (PFNDAI)  focused on wellness foods and its future with respect to market, science, technology and regulation involved along with a small showcase of ingredients and products available for them.

The event was inaugurated by Dr Ram Rajasekharan, Director, Central Food Technological Research Institute, (CFTRI), Mysore, followed by a special address by Geetu Verma, Executive Director, Hindustan Unilever.
Dr Vijay Tijare, General Manager of Venky’s spoke on the role of nutrition in terms of sports and fitness, whereas Dr K Srinivasan, Chief Scientist, Biochemistry and Nutrition, CFTRI enlightened the audience by depicting the role of spices as functional food for deriving health and wellness.

 Dr B Sesikeran, Ex-Director, National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) Hyderabad spoke on efficacy and safety of Bio Active substances while Deepak Gunvante, Vice President, Nutritionals R&D, GSK spoke on functional food products for health. Vijay Uttarwar, CEO, Naturell India described the role of energy bars in terms of providing nutrition.

Other eminent speakers who addressed the gathering include  Dr Vongsvat Kosulwat, Director, Nutrition Science R&D, Mead Johnson Nutrition (Development of infants & requirements); Sheela Krishnaswamy, Dietician (Role of nutrients in growth & development of children); Dr Jayant Deshpande, Chief Technical Officer, OminiActiv Health (Age-related problems and solutions); and Vijay Bhaskar Reddy, R&D Head, Dabur, (Health & wellness fruit products), and Dr J I Lewis, Chairman, Regulatory Affairs, PFNDAI spoke on the Regulatory aspect on food safety and security.
