Rini Sanyal, head, worldwide regulatory & government affairs, Herbalife is responsible for regulatory advocacy, compliance as well as creating a harmonized legislative environment conductive to industry. Prior to that, she was leading the food practice in Amarchand Mangaldas, which is a leading law farm of India.

Rini was recently elected as the new Vice-Chairperson of Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA), an autonomous, self-regulatory body for the direct selling industry in India.

Rini was an external consultant to Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and advised the authority on various strategic legal & regulatory matters. She was also an active member in drafting key regulations and harmonisation of food standards.

She was one of the lead consultants for undertaking training for various grades of FSSAI officials including the adjudicating officers on a pan-India scale and has developed various training modules on implementation and enforcement of the food safety act.

Talking about her achievements, Rini says, “I feel that joining FICCI was the biggest game changer for me. Learning food regulations and its nuances strengthen my nutrition and human physiology background a lot. This even added some major attributes to my experience, working with Food Safety & Standards Authority of India since its inception in developing key rules and regulations.”

She was also invited by Michigan University, USA for a food safety regulatory symposium of 14 countries to present the Indian food regulatory framework under FSSAI.

Speaking about the challenges she faced in her career Rini says, “I feel the challenges are actually from within – in strive for perfection. Even though traditionally it was a male dominated industry, today, more and more women are becoming a part of it and are being accepted equally.”

Talking about her journey Rini said, “When I started this journey, I was sceptical of how I was going to handle everything, especially since I hadn’t worked in Direct Selling previously nor I had any knowledge about the business. So I went forward with some basic objectives – to support the growth of the business and make it compliant, which would make Herbalife as an admired brand. I think this job has transformed me a lot as an individual, to believe in myself and face everything with a smile. I owe my success to each one of them. Work is an admixture of sincerity and fun coupled together.”

She says that woman have advantage of being capable of multitasking. “Being a woman, I feel we have advantage of being capable of multitasking and hence, depending on the situation we are in, we plan our present and future. Sometimes our family commitments pull us back and we generally have the tendency to listen to our hearts instead of our heads. I feel, today’s women are capable to accept any challenge in life, so love what you do and have faith in yourself so that no one can stop you from being successful—if you are passionately involved in your work. It is you who determines your future, so choice is yours … go and get it for yourself.”
