Indian food and grocery market is the 6th largest in the world with retail contributing 70 per cent sales

India’s food and grocery market is expected to touch $482 billion by 2020. India’s food industry stands at $39.71 billion. It is expected to grow at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 11 per cent to $65.4 billion by 2018. Indian food and grocery market is the 6th largest in the world with retail contributing 70 per cent sales. Indian food processing industry accounts for 32 per cent of the country’s total food market, it is ranked 5th in terms of production, consumption, export and expected growth.

Keeping this in mind, Synnex Business Media has organised ‘India Food Safety Summit and Awards 2018’ in New Delhi. The agenda of this year’ summit was ‘Ensuring Safety from Farm to Fork’. The two day conference saw participation of over 283 delegates comprising of food distributors, retailers, food service operators, regulators etc.

In her key note address at the summit, Dr Rubeena Shaheen, Director-Food Safety Management System (FSMS) & R&D, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said “FSSAI allowed issuance of Provisional NOC (P-NOC) for imported pre-packaged retail food articles. It has reduced the clearance time, congestion at ports and demurrage charges on importers. FSSAI has also developed Food Import Rejection Alert (FIRA) System for capturing noncompliances of all imported food product consignments and has been operationalized from October 31, 2018. Based on the compliance history of importers, only 5 per cent low risk items and 25 per cent high risk food items are referred by Customs to FSSAI for examination and clearance.

She further said that the apex food regulator, FSSAI has developed smart and digital compliance system such as Food Licensing and Registration System for licensing and registration of food businesses- an online system for applying for registration and licensing of food businesses, and Enforcement and surveillance through regular sampling of food products and inspection of food businesses through a network of state food safety Authorities.  

There were panel discussions on challenges faced in maintaining safety & quality through packaging talking about trends and new practices in packaging; Future of Indian Food Industry talking about the best practices that can be implemented to achieve maximum quality and safety standards while ensuring profitability and sustainability along with Hazards and challenges for the Food industry along with food Safety & Quality in Dairy and Associated Dairy Products talking about the challenges and roadblocks in implementing optimum safety and quality measures and the solutions for them.
