Diabetes, or Madhumeha, is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world today. Though the awareness about the disease is growing, it still affects millions of people. Diet, lifestyle, and stress play a crucial role in the management as well as prevention of diabetes.

Common dietary and lifestyle causes of diabetes in Ayurveda are excessive consumption of kapha aggravating foods, continuous eating, lethargic lifestyle, lack of physical activities and exercises, excess sleeping, genetic factor, stress, fear and long-standing illness.

There are many herbs in Ayurveda that can provide long-lasting relief from such diabetic conditions. Many people are not aware of these herbs. Let us look at some of them for health benefit.

Gurmar – Madhunashini

The leaves of this herb have astringent qualities as it can provide relief from blood glucose imbalances especially during the initial stages of the disease. In a way, consuming this herb can prevent the sugar diabetes condition from worsening. This herb contains an active component, a gymnemic acid that helps in decreasing glucose absorption thereby leading to weight loss in obese individuals.

This herb has the ability to reduce the accumulation of Kapha Dosha but, they can cause dullness in the taste buds.

Cinnamon – Daalchini

Cinnamon has qualities to reduce the risk factors associated with diabetes-related heart diseases. Research has proved that patients consuming cinnamon showed reduced risk levels of heart disease linked to diabetes.

Fenugreek – Methi

Fenugreek has wide mention in both Ayurveda and Chinese medicine as having special qualities in reducing fat and regulating the glucose levels in the blood. One of the best ways to consume this medicine is to soak some fenugreek seeds in a copper vessel overnight. Consuming the water after discarding the seeds can provide relief from diabetic conditions.

Shilajit

Shilajit is not a herb in the strict sense of the term, but it has great powers to stimulate the secretion of insulin in the pancreas. Hence, it has benefits in treating diabetic conditions.
