The upcoming Smart Protein Summit by the Good Food Institute India (GFI India) will convene Indian and global leaders in support of the exciting alternative protein sector

The global alternative protein sector is at the forefront of food innovation, with billions of dollars invested in plant-based, cultivated, and fermentation-derived meat, eggs, and dairy foods.

The upcoming Smart Protein Summit by the Good Food Institute India (GFI India) will convene Indian and global leaders in support of the exciting alternative protein sector over October 6-10, and articulate a vision for the growth of the sector in India.

The event will bring together over 1500 leaders and attendees from science, business, and policy to learn more about alternative protein and its potential in India and the broader developing world.

The Summit is timely as 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic has proved that the old normal i.e. animal-sourced foods increases the risk of zoonotic disease, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, and food insecurity. Alternative protein foods taste and perform like their animal-derived counterparts, but are vastly superior in the form of sustainability, public health, and efficiency. GFI India believes that as we navigate the next decade and beyond, we need a more healthy, sustainable, and just food system. We need a Mission for Smart Protein.

GFI India’s Managing Director Varun Deshpande underscores why it is important to articulate this Mission at the Summit: “All over the world, innovators are producing the future of protein – delicious, nutritious meat, eggs, and dairy, made without animals. But the story of the smart protein sector in the developing world is still being written. As we build the future of food from the ground up in markets like India, we have the opportunity to harness their unique strengths and tackle their unique challenges, and to work side by side with disadvantaged groups and communities like farmers and the malnourished. In one stroke, we could invest in the industries of the future, stave off climate change, and safeguard our food security and public health for generations.”

Last year, GFI India co-organized the Future of Protein Summit 2019 – a major staging ground for the sector in the region. This year, it hopes to “take India from Scarcity to Abundance” with the Smart Protein Summit.

You can look forward to five days of exciting sessions with over 40 speakers including addresses from India’s Emissary to the G7 & G20 Shri Suresh Prabhu, hugely respected business leader and former PepsiCo global CEO Indra Nooyi, several Members of Parliament, Ambassadors and senior representatives from countries such as the Netherlands, Canada, and Singapore, alternative protein pioneers like Josh Tetrick of Eat Just, Inc,. Dr. Sandhya Sriram of Shiok Meats, Didier Toubia of Aleph Farms, and Riteish and Genelia Deshmukh of Imagine Meats. To know more about the agenda and register, visit the Summit website here.
