DFRL Mysuru designs biodegradable water bottle

These bottles were created to combat the growing issue of plastic pollution caused by littering and inadequate recycling efforts

The Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), a DRDO lab in Mysuru, has created a biodegradable water bottle to reduce the carbon footprint on the environment.

Ajay Bhat, Union Minister of State for Defence and Tourism launched limited edition bottles during a two-day national seminar at SDM College.

DFRL-DRDO has released a statement stating that these bio-degradable bottles meet the compostable standards of ISO 17088-2021 and IS 17899 T: 2022. Not only are these bottles safe for food and beverage use, but even the bottle caps and labels are compostable.

These bottles look like those other bottles as they too are transparent. Besides, these are as durable and strong as any other plastic bottle.

These bottles were created to combat the growing issue of plastic pollution caused by littering and inadequate recycling efforts. M/s Konkan Specialty Polyproducts Ltd in Mangaluru collaborated on their development, utilising poly lactic acid and the injection blow moulding technique.

These bottles cannot be developed for commercial use due to the scarcity of raw materials.
