The closed-loop programme, which involves the supply, collection and reproduction of Mondi’s 100 per cent recyclable corrugated packaging, is in line with EU regulatory developments such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation
Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has launched a closed-loop programme in partnership with Biedronka, Poland’s largest retail chain.
The closed-loop programme, which involves the supply, collection and reproduction of Mondi’s 100 per cent recyclable corrugated packaging, is in line with EU regulatory developments such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Biedronka, a leader in the grocery trade, is committed to its sustainability roadmap and implementing best practices with its suppliers. The roadmap includes a 10 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2026 (from a 2021 baseline) and a 10 per cent reduction in plastic consumption by 2025 (from a 2018 baseline).
“Creating a truly circular economy for corrugated packaging in the retail industry is a collective effort. Mondi is proud to partner with Biedronka to lead this transformative initiative. By working closely with our partners throughout the value chain, we are setting a new standard for sustainability that not only complies with EU regulations but also paves the way for scalable solutions across Europe. This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation in sustainable practices,” says Mateusz Buchowiecki, Key Account Manager in Mondi’s Corrugated Solutions team in Poland.
“At Biedronka, sustainability is a key priority and our collaboration with Mondi marks a major milestone in our environmental journey. This closed-loop programme allows us to strategically adjust our use of virgin material and enhance our recycling efforts,” says Agnieszka Koc, Sustainability and ESC Director, Biedronka.
The new partnership between Mondi and Biedronka addresses global environmental challenges by promoting zero waste and sustainability principles. In a joint webinar on 21 May, experts from both companies discussed the eco-design principles underpinning the programme, and how Biedronka suppliers can benefit from the partnership.
