Decade long committment comes to fruition
Danone has announced that its facility in Wexford, Ireland is the first baby formula production site in the world to be certified carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust, an independent global climate change and sustainability consultancy.
This industry-leading milestone is a step towards achieving the company’s goal of zero net carbon emissions by 2050.
The manufacturers of the popular brand Aptamil, Cow & Gate, Nutrilon and Mellin and meeting the global demands in over 41 countries, it took the French company nearly a decade to achieve this feat.
The company announced milestones such as Zero-waste to landfill, switching to 100 percent renewable electricity, Biomass boiler powered by sustainable wood fuels and 70 percentreduction in its direct carbon footprint whilst doubling production volumes in its journey to attaining carbon neutrality.
After having reduced the CO2 emission of the plant as far as was technically possible, the Carbon Trust certified Danone Wexford as carbon neutral in line with the requirements of the internationally-recognized PAS 2060 standard for carbon neutrality. The company has declared that it will continue to reduce its carbon emissions to ensure it maintains the carbon neutral certification and will look for more ways to manufacture baby formula sustainably.
