The Department of Dietetics, Apollo Hospitals Group has organised 6th Apollo International Clinical Nutrition Update (AICNU) 2014 on the theme ‘Paediatrics to Geriatrics: Practice Based Evidence in Clinical Nutrition’ in Bangalore on August 9-10, 2014. Close to 250 dietitians and nutritionists from different parts of the country participated in this two day update.

The conference began with presentation on current issues in childhood overweight and adiposity: a clinical and public health perspective from Prof Anura V Kurpad, head of nutrition division, Dr Rebecca Raj, head of clinical nutrition unit St. John Hospitals, Bangalore. Later Dr Reynaldo Sinamban, Consultant Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery, St Luke’s Medical Centre, Philippines spoke on ‘Insights on Pre & Post-Operative Nutrition and Sylvia See Way LAM, Senior Registered Dietitian, Hong Kong spoke on ‘Evolution of Diabetes Medical Nutrition Therapy: Updates on guidelines and New Insights. The other faculty who spoke at the sessions include distinguished national and international physicians, surgeons, pediatricians, intensivists, dietitians and experts in the field.

Sharing his thoughts through a recorded video message, Dr Prathap C Reddy, Chairman Apollo Hospitals Group said, “There is overwhelming scientific evidence to support the role of proper diet in the new medicine paradigm and furthermore, to address the burgeoning demands of disease, it is the responsibility of the entire medical fraternity to stay ahead of the curve. In an advancing medical landscape, dietitians will play a greater role than ever before and therefore it is critical that they continuously stay abreast of global trends and development in the field. The 6th Apollo International Clinical Nutrition Update is an effort to augment the knowledge of the dietitians across India by sharing the evidence-based best practices in Clinical Nutrition and also by facilitating an exchange of ideas and knowledge between different disciplines. I do hope that all the participants harness the immense knowledge that this forum brings forth in addressing the ever increasing and changing demands on the clinical dietitian’s expertise”.

Dr Bhuvaneshwari Shankar, Group Chief Dietitian and Vice President, Apollo Hospitals & Organizing Secretary AICNU said, “The 6th Apollo International Clinical Nutrition Update has been purpose-designed to demonstrate the value of nutrition intervention through meaningful metrics and to assist attendees stay abreast of current trends and skills needed for advanced practice. In addition to general and concurrent adult and pediatric sessions, there were opportunities to network with other healthcare leaders and to also view an array of products displayed by companies in the business”.

The AICNU is an annual event which addresses aspects of patient care at hospitals and also that of hospital-based nutritional intervention. In the Scientific Programme of this Update, Doctors and Dietitians addressed medical and nutritional requirements of different clinical conditions. Besides, the technical sessions, it has poster presentations and clinical nutrition quiz.

The Department of Dietetics, Apollo Hospitals Group is known for its ethos to establish and encourage good nutritional practices and standards as an integral element of the care process. The Department has been resolute in its commitment to stay ahead of the curve by adopting new technologies and innovations in the field of clinical nutrition towards continuous improvement and to benchmark its nutrition practices.

A recipient of numerous accolades, it was the first Indian Hospitals to have accomplished a distinct place in the International Nutrition Survey (INS) 2012 wherein 183 intensive care units (ICUs) had participated and Apollo Hospitals Main, Chennai and Apollo Specialty Hospitals Madurai were accorded the award for the Best Critical Care Nutrition. Representing the group’s commitment, 15 ICUs and 4 Oncology Departments across Apollo Hospitals across India had participated in the Nutrition Day Survey 2013.
