Food Safety department officials said that there was a surge in the number of applicants looking to register home-based food services
Many people have polished their cooking skills while being stuck at home during this lockdown. Some even took it a step further by venturing into home cooking as a part-time business. The Food Safety Department officials have said that there was a surge in the number of applicants looking to register home-based food services. Since eateries (big and small) were closed down during the pandemic, a large number of people were seen trying out the home chef business. The Food Safety Department has urged these people to register with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
According to the department’s guidelines, people running a food business with a monthly turnover of up to Rs 1 lakh should register with FSSAI, and those above that should acquire a licence from the apex food regulatory body.
The Food Safety Department is conducting inspections and organising camps to make sure that all the food businesses, including the ones that handle and deliver food, were registered.
Ashwin Bhadri, CEO of Equinox Labs, says, “These people are certainly living by the motto ‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade’. In times like these, we must make do with what we have got and always look for the positives. To hear something like this is encouraging. That being said, some people still have not obtained a certificate of registration and they must do so as quickly as possible. All food businesses must comply with the regulations laid out by the FSSAI and operate legally in this country.”
