Dr Muhammed Majeed, the visionary Founder and Chairman of Sami-Sabinsa Group Limited, passed away on March 13 in Chennai, India at the age of 75. The Majeed family announces his sad demise. Dr Majeed was a guiding force, mentor, and source of inspiration for all who had the privilege to work alongside him. He was an internationally acclaimed scientist and among the biggest names in the Indian and global nutraceutical and cosmeceutical industries.
Dr Majeed was born on September 25, 1948, in Kollam, Kerala, India. He introduced the glory of Indian herbal extracts to global markets through his relentless efforts and was honoured as the “Father of the Indian Nutraceutical Industry.” He has won over a hundred international recognitions and numerous patents for his work in combining the ancient knowledge of Ayurveda with modern science and enriching human life.
Dr Majeed had more than 45 years of research experience in the industry, including roles with Pfizer Inc., Carter-Wallace and Paco Research. He founded Sabinsa Corp., a research-oriented pharmaceutical and nutraceutical marketing company in 1988. In 1991, he set up the Sami Labs Ltd. research group in Bangalore, India, which combines manufacturing and global marketing of nutraceuticals and fine chemicals with cutting-edge research. The company has won many awards.
Dr Majeed received numerous awards from several Indian-American groups. He also received the 1996 Entrepreneur of the Year award from the National Federation of Asian Americans. In 2021, he was awarded an honorary title and award as the “Father of the Indian Nutraceuticals Industry” during the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India’s (ASSOCHAM’s) virtual conference.
