Brahmbhatt, in an interaction with NUFFOODS Spectrum, talks about the long-term goals of BBRL, the innovations being undertaken and about the VOPPA order.
What are the current challenges in India’s edible oil sector?
India’s edible oil sector faces significant challenges, including a heavy reliance on imports, with imports meeting 55-60 per cent of domestic demand. Price volatility driven by climate change and global market dynamics creates instability.
The Govt has recently issued the VOPPA order for the edible oil sector. Do you think this order will bring in more transparency in the edible oil sector?
The VOPPA 2025 Amendment mandates mandatory online registration and monthly digital reporting of stocks, production, and prices for all edible oil stakeholders. This order should significantly enhance transparency through real-time monitoring, accurate data collection, and improved policy intervention capabilities. With penalties for non-compliance and planned inspection drives, the initiative strengthens regulatory oversight. The digital approach enables government authorities to
better track supply chains, prevent hoarding, and make informed decisions regarding food security and price stabilisation.
Where are your oil production facilities located?
Budge Budge Refineries Limited (parent company of Doctors’ Choice) is headquartered in Budge Budge, West Bengal, with its corporate office at Phool Bagan, Kolkata. The company has grown from Initially, 30 tonnes per day, to approximately 1,750 tonnes per day production capacity. The refining facility is located in Budge Budge, South 24 Parganas district. Manufacturing operations utilise fully automated refining and filling processes with modern European-based technology.

Market Penetration: Our geographical expansion focuses on establishing a strong presence across the eastern region beyond West Bengal within the next three years.
