Dr Kulkarni’s career at ICMR-NIN has been marked by her extensive contributions to nutrition research
Dr Bharati Kulkarni, a renowned physician-scientist with over 20 years of experience in nutrition research, has officially assumed the position of Director at the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN) in Hyderabad.
Dr Kulkarni brings a wealth of expertise in paediatrics and public health, having specialized in these fields at the University of Pune and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA. She also earned her doctoral degree in 2014 from Queensland University of Technology, Australia.
Dr. Kulkarni’s career at ICMR-NIN has been marked by her extensive contributions to nutrition research. She has led numerous large multi-centric research projects focusing on critical public health issues, particularly those related to maternal and child nutrition, including anaemia, childhood undernutrition, and developmental origins of health and disease. Her work on body composition, community-based interventions, and agriculture-nutrition linkages has had a significant impact on health and nutrition policies in India.
From 2021 to 2024, Dr Kulkarni served as the Head of the Division of Reproductive and Child Health and Nutrition at ICMR, New Delhi. During her tenure, she spearheaded projects aimed at improving complementary feeding for young children, updating growth and development standards for Indian children, and reducing anaemia and stillbirths across the country.
