Punjab Agricultural University introduces PBW Biscuit

A wheat variety tailored for the food processing industry to enhance the quality of biscuits while increasing farmers’ incomes

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has introduced PBW Biscuit 1, a wheat variety specifically designed for the food processing industry. This new variety aims to enhance the quality of biscuits while increasing farmers’ incomes. Inspired by the popularity of ‘atta’ biscuits in Punjab, PBW Biscuit 1 will be available to farmers starting from the next rabi season.

In addition to PBW Biscuit 1, PAU has released several other crop varieties this year, including:- Punjab Cheena 1 (proso millet): This variety is high in protein, calcium, and iron, and has a low glycemic index, making it ideal for sustainable farming.- OL 17 (oats): A versatile fodder crop that is gaining popularity as a breakfast cereal.- Other crops include J 1008 (fodder maize), PCB 167 (fodder), PGSH 2155 (canola-type gobhi sarson), PHR 127 (raya), PBHL 56 (brinjal), Punjab Mithas (watermelon), Punjab Amrit (muskmelon), and two varieties of Jamun.

Farmer Gurbaksh Singh from Malakpur emphasises that millets like Punjab Cheena 1 are profitable and sustainable alternatives to water-intensive crops like rice. PAU’s initiatives support the promotion of agricultural innovation.
